My Name Is Shawna, And I Am A Trash Digger.

Ok, so, I don't really "dig" for trash, but I do pick it up off the streets when I go on walks or from the playgrounds of parks when I take my kids there to play. Trash is irritating to me. I mean, honestly, how many seconds of a person's precious time does it take to throw a bottle into the trash instead of on the ground?

I have channeled my hatred for litter into art recently, much to my husband and children's chagrin.  Our house is literally overflowing with all of my stupid crafty, Pinteresty, cluttery crap already and now I am adding actual trash (and not even our own trash) to the mess.

My husband and I went to a swap meet for our anniversary and I saw all kinds of crafty stuff for sale at ridiculous prices. All of it was stuff I could make myself so I decided to combine my love for DIY with other people's trash and try my hand at selling it.

My newest creation. I call it "Trash Rainbow" for lack of titling abilities.

This one is a little more random, but I still like it.

I am almost positive my kids probably think I am the weirdest lady in all of existence without the aid of my new found hobbies. I used to go to places where we lived in California and pick of glass from the shores of artisans and lakes that we took our kids to because no kid needs to slice their foot open while trying to have fun in a public swimming area but drunk people are dicks sometimes and smash their bottles all over.

I remember being a teenager and thinking my actions had no consequences so I won't be mad about it forever, but it still grinds my gears.

This was made out of the glass of a million jerk wads.

I decided to update my Etsy and see if I get any bites so I can supply my crack craft habit and continue immortalizing other humans' garbage. Here's the link if you want to check out my little shop or share it with someone who might appreciate it. My husband will hate you forever for encouraging me, but I will kiss you on the mouth.

  2. I'm not crafty, but I despise litter so I love that you made trash beautiful. Oscar would be proud.

  3. I'm a trash digger too. I've been picking up interesting scraps of metal and other random junk from our streets and alleyways for years. My favorite recent additions are an eyelash curler and a pair of metal glasses frames that were both squashed flat by passing trucks in our back lane.

I don't do anything creative with them, though, they just sit on top of one of my bookshelves gathering dust along with my collection of Sort Of Interesting Rocks and Random Animal Figurines My Grandparents Gave Me When I Was Little.

  4. Yay! A new post! I always feel all happy inside when I see you've posted something new. As usual, you did not disappoint. All the artwork you made is so freaking creative. It's hard to pick a favorite. Maybe the glass one? So cool. :)

  5. My husband thinks everything I collect is junk: Here is a pic of part of my superball collection:

My husband says it's still junk, even if you put it in a vase. Pfft ... he doesn't know shit about art.

Similarly, if you take a photograph it with a dog, it's automagically adorable:

Maggie can't decide which ball she loves best.

  6. Very creative and cool! I have adopted the road outside my subdivision and I never find anything cool, unless used condoms are cool. I have found people who drink Dr. Pepper and eat Doritos litter the most. I find an abnormal amount of combs. I wander if the cool kids are doing something funky with combs lately. I will check out your Etsy.

    1. I have only found one comb. I am going to make a huge piece with bread tabs since those are abundant here.

  7. Amazing stuff. I take pictures of interesting trash and then pick it up and throw it away if I can. Sometimes I can't. The Big Wheel that somebody left on the sidewalk was just too big to go in the trash and I hope somebody else picked it up for their kid.
There's also a state park where I hike and sometimes I take a small bag and pick up peoples' trash. I can't decide which is worse: throwing trash on the sidewalk when there's a trash can two feet away or ruining the nature of beauty because you can't hold onto your trash until you get back to the visitors' center.

  8. Your DIY crafts are really interesting. I'm curious though as to how many people are buying...like, should I be quitting my day job here and taking up trash collecting, because that sounds more fun that looking at blood.

  9. I would die under my hoard if i found things like big wheels all the time. And, Sandra, no one really buys it. I just collect a bunch of garbage to see how close to divorce I can push this marriage thing.
